The MIND Diet: Fighting Off Brain Decline Among Seniors

As a provider of non-medical home care in San Jose, California, we at Boundless Care, Inc., have always preferred holistic care practices. This is our pledge among those we serve as much as what our firsthand experiences have taught us to be effective.

This holistic care means, among others, developing our patients’ care plan with not only the home care services in California appropriate to them, for instance, but also with an evidence-backed diet to cover their nutrition needs.

For our Alzheimer’s patients, this diet comes in the form of MIND, a product of a decade-long study made to slow down and prevent brain decline. Short for Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, the MIND diet includes the appropriate servings of leafy greens, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, salmon, olive oil, and wine, and avoids red meat, butter and margarine, certain cheeses, sweets, and fried or fast food.

Following this diet religiously lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by as high as 53% while doing so less may benefit patients by at least 35%.

If you’re considering shifting your loved one’s current diet into the MIND diet, we recommend going slowly by incorporating these MIND foods into their diet little by little. This makes sure that you don’t upset their taste buds and risk losing their appetite—a common issue among seniors.
